Weirdest Holiday Gifts

A look at strange and unusual gifts given to students over the years.

With the holiday season comes gifts, the average American spends almost $1,000 every year on holiday gifts. Everyone loves gifts, but some aren’t the best at giving them. Sometimes people get gag gifts, or white elephant gifts (funny gifts people wouldn’t usually receive for a holiday) or maybe even just a plain old bad gift. These can be given out for numerous reasons such as to create a fun and silly experience for the whole family.

Some students seem to have gotten some wacky gifts through the years. Freshman Rae Reeve received a flat basketball that was bent into the shape of a hat for a white elephant gift in the fifth grade.

“I was laughing a bunch but was very confused,” Reeve said,“I honestly think someone was just trying to get rid of their flat basketball.”

Senior Isabelle Porter was gifted a mask covered in unopened bandaids hanging down like a beard, from her dad.

“Every year my dad does gag gifts for the entire family and in 2020 he made everyone masks and decorated them and mine had unopened bandaids hanging down like a beard,” Porter said. “I cracked up, I thought it was really funny.”

Sophomore Grace Owen was given a block of wood from her little cousin. She asked his mom about it, but no one knew where the wood or the idea for it came from.

“I did think he was joking but he was serious about it, so I just said ‘oh thank you this is so thoughtful of you thank you,’” Owen said.

Gifts like these create lots of laughs and memories, next time you’re thinking about a gift for the holiday season you too can do a whacky gag gift such as a real gift in a prank box, a funny card, an empty milk container, weird and unusual clothing items, funny accessories and more. A lot of these can be found on Amazon and some at a local store. It will surely make for an experience full of memories.
