Spirit Week: Oz-Style

Spirit Week: Oz-Style

September 20 marked the first day of the Wizard-of-Oz-themed spirit week to pump up students for homecoming. LHS StuCo’s spirit committee thought of the theme ideas and hung up several posters to help promote the spirit days.  Many students participated and brought positive enthusiasm throughout the high school.

Monday was “Welcome to Kansas” day, which brought an abundance of flannel, denim and country spirit to the high school.

“It was fun getting to wear my cowgirl boots,” senior Lauren Ryan said. “It gave me an excuse to wear something to school that I otherwise never would. It was a cute spirit day idea to go along with the homecoming theme.”

“Twister Tuesday” was the following day where students wore their most wacky clothing combinations. Socks with sandals, patterned clothes and bright colored leggings were just a few examples of what students wore that day. Some students went all out and wore their most ridiculous outfit.

“I saw someone in a pizza costume,” junior Nyla Dahlberg. “[Spirit days] like these are my favorite because it’s so entertaining to see people wearing such crazy outfits.”

Wednesday was “Wizard Wednesday”, which meant dressing up in nerdy clothes. Glasses and suspenders were a popular choice among students who participated that day. For some students, the term “wizard” was taken literally and students showed up with cloaks, wands and pointy hats. Senior Cecelia Cook was among the group of students that took “Wizard Wednesday” as an opportunity to wear their most magical ensemble.

“I mean, of course I wore my cloak,” Cook said. “I found it strange that people weren’t dressed up as wizards—I mean the theme name has the word wizard in it!”

Thursday was class colors day—freshman wore black, sophomores wore yellow, juniors wore green, and seniors wore red. The specific colors were greatly represented among each class.

“I don’t think I saw one senior not wearing red,” senior Alex Kretsinger said. “Everyone did a great job wearing their designated color—even the freshmen!”

To end the spirit week off, Friday was dedicated to Blue Jay pride. Students were decked out in blue, black and white and celebrated in their high school colors. StuCo advisor Melanie Prince expressed her satisfaction in how well the spirit week went during the homecoming pep rally.

“The spirit during Homecoming Week was by far the best I have seen in my nine years here at LHS,” Prince said. “It was so amazing to see so many students dressed up throughout the week and the energy in the Pep Rally truly gave me chills!”`

Overall, homecoming week was a success and spirit days will continue to bring school pride to both students and staff.
