A Splash of Spirit
New spirit leaders announced for 2023-2024 school year.
On May 9, 2023, the two new spirit leaders for the 2023-2024 school year were announced in front of almost 2000 students and faculty at the senior’s last day assembly. Seniors Dawson Harmon and Ava Hood will take over for former spirit leaders Devin Wallace and Morgan Cannon during the next school year.
“My favorite thing about being spirit leader would most definitely be the football season as a whole,” Wallace said. “Every Friday, being able to hangout with friends and go and do something afterwards was always fun.”
The spirit leaders are tasked with organizing the student section at sporting events with chants, helping plan spirit weeks and helping grow school spirit while making sure students’ voices are heard regarding these events.
“Being a spirit leader taught me responsibility and going outside of my comfort zone.” Wallace said. “There were outfits I wore that were super funny but crazy at the same time. It was also a lot of work knowing what games were at what time and figuring out themes.”
Spirit leaders are selected from the current junior class and serve for their senior year up until graduation. Spirit leaders regularly attend varsity home sporting events such as basketball, football, volleyball, baseball and soccer games.
“I would tell the spirit leaders next year to have fun with it because it goes by quickly,” Wallace said. “Don’t be afraid to dress up and wear crazy things and most importantly don’t let yourself feel embarrassed.”
Those curious about becoming a spirit leader in the future can talk to Marla Badalucco or Kara Giesert about applying. Those who apply will go through an extensive interview with a panel filled with administrators and the current spirit leaders.
