In a Press Conference before school started on Wednesday morning, Football Coach Chad Frigon discussed the team’s season. Their record so far is 2-0, losing to Lee Summit West and Kearney in the last two weeks.
“It’s tough when you open the season with two losses, but this group seems to be very resilient,” Frigon said. “Were disappointed in our record at this point, but at the same time, understand the schedule is rigorous at the beginning of the year.”
This Friday night, September 4, at seven o’clock, the LHS Blue Jays face off against Ray-Pec.
“This week we play Ray-Pec, [the team] is 1-1. They lost to Staley last week, but beat Belton… we know they’re going to be very good opponents.” Frigon said.
The football team has figured out where they are struggling and plan to improve.
“I think they understand, they’re moving the football, we’ve had them from the 600 line on the offense in two games, they just haven’t been able to put it in the end zone. That’s somewhere we have to improve,” Frigon said. “One of our big things is field position, we are going to try an improve this week. We’ve had really, offensively, not been able to capitalize on a number of drives and we’re putting our defense in a bad spot.’
The football team acknowledges they have played two good teams these past two weeks.
“Our goal is to get better each week…we’ve had a rough start to the season… we’ve played some really good teams,” Frigon said.
The LHS football team has been working hard and is excited to play this Friday night.
“We talk each week about getting better and one of the things we can improve at and we’re excited to see what we’ve worked at, improved at and practiced this week and how it can help us at the home game this Friday,” Frigon said.
Overall, Frigon says he is confident with his football team.
“We are confident that our kids are doing things right and getting better each week.”
Looking down the road, Frigon said it is too early to start preparing for the homecoming football game.
“We haven’t done anything homecoming wise, it’s a couple weeks away yet. In football you have to go week by week, because so many teams have different schemes and things you have to prepare for,” Frigon said.
The location of the homecoming game will be at the LHS field.
“The homecoming game is going to be here at Liberty High School,” Frigon said.” (That) Friday night will be the first time we have ever had a homecoming game at the LHS campus.”
The LHS freshman football team won their first football game against North Kansas City.
“They [freshman football team] won their first game 52-6 over at North Kansas City. They had a lead of 56-0 at the half,” Frigon said.
No matter what, win or lose, the football team after every game says a creed together.
“What we do as a team, we have a creed that we say together after the games, whether we win or lose, it keeps our mind level headed.”
