Blue Jays Come Home
The LHS football team took on Park Hill South for the 2016 season Homecoming game. The Jays went into the game with a 5-1 record and were coming off their first loss of the season to Platte County. The student section filled up quickly as the powder party came to a close.
“The atmosphere was great,” junior Landon Worstell said. “The student section was excited and ready to cheer on our boys.”
As the game got started it appeared it would be close as both teams battled it out. The first half came to an end as the Jays went into the locker room down 14-7. Despite the disappointing first half, the Jays came out and posted a 64 yard drive, topped off with a five yard touchdown to cut the deficit to one point.
After a promising first drive the game began to slow down. Park Hill South scored a big touchdown with one minute remaining to take a seven point lead. With only a minute to work with the Jays manage to get the ball down to the 14 yard line with only three seconds left. In the final play of the game, junior Thomas Henricks lobbed a ball into the back of the end zone, only to be incomplete. The Jays fell 26-19 in a heartbreaking loss.
Junior Robert Rawie felt like the team could improve with blocking, and also said that he feels like the season is still looking good.
“Park Hill South played pretty well and they just made a few more plays than us. There were times where we could’ve executed better.”
Still, the spirit of Homecoming lives on as the teamwork shown in the game warmed everyone up for the dance Saturday night.
“Even though the game didn’t turn out the way we wanted, it was still a lot of fun and we’re proud of our team,” Worstell said.
